Resources - Suggested Activities  
Make languages a part of your everyday life through cultural activities at embassies, museums and theatres or simply by reading a bilingual book, cooking an authentic meal or practicing what has been learned in class. The Club Español, Club Français, and Club ASL activities below will help to enhance your language experience.

Club Español

  • Read popular books that have been translated to Spanish

  • Make Spanish dishes for breakfast, lunch or dinner:

    • Tortilla (Spanish omelet filled with potato)

    • Arroz con pollo (chicken and rice mixed with Spanish spices)

    • Paella (rice dish tossed with seafood)

  • Practice the vocabulary learned in class each week by using it as part of your daily routine

  • Use the Rock 'N Learn CD's to help with pronunciation

  • Attend Spanish cultural events at museums, embassies and other venues in the city (check Discovery Theatre and the Children's Museum)

  • Use art by making a tissue paper rosa, a flower flamenco dancers wear in their hair

  • Attend or visit a flamenco, salsa, or Latin jazz dance class at Joy of Motion (202-387-0911) or Oxford Academy of Arts (202-544-4962)

  • Play board games in Spanish - Dora, Monopoly, Scrabble, Pictionary

  • Check Teatre de la Luna, a Spanish language theater (202-882-6277) for performances

  • Check embassies of Spain, Mexico and Latin America (www.embassyevents.com or 202-625-2470 Hill Ray magazine)

  • Visit heavily populated Hispanic neighborhoods in Arlington, VA (between Mount Vernon and Glebe Roads) or Langley Park, MD

  • Rent a Spanish video at Blockbuster or other video stores

  • Attend story time at the Hyattsville library on Saturdays at 10:30am

  • Attend story time at Barnes & Noble in Bowie Town Center (call and check the schedule for dates and times)

 

Club Français

 

Club ASL

·         Visit Gallaudet University, in Washington, DC, and observe all of the beautiful signs language being used on campus

·         Visit Gallaudet University's book store and browse the book selections on signing, Deafness, and Deaf Culture

·         Find out if your local theater is showing your favorite movie, with captions, and attend knowing that you will enjoy a wonderful movie and see the Deaf Community communicating through sign language

·         Read a story book that includes signs in the passages. Available at Gallaudet or your local bookstore

·         Practice the vocabulary you've learned in class, each week, by using it as a part of your everyday routine

·         Borrow a sign language vocabulary or story time video from your local library and watch it with your family

·         Borrow an American Sign Language dictionary from your local library and create flash cards for your family

  • Label each thing in your home with a picture of its matching sign

  • Attend a local event being interpreted in American Sign Language and see how well you understand the interpretation of a play, story time hour, concert, etc.
